Ach, tá intubácia... seu Magillovo anestéziologické inštrumentárium
Sir Ivan Maggil bol jeden z najvýznamnejších priekopníkov v modernej anestéziológii. Vytvoril základné inštrumentárium na zaistenie dýchacích ciest intubáciou. Rozpracoval návrhy na intubačné kanyly na princípoch anatómie a fyziológie. Intubačné kanyly sú zakrivené, aby kopírovali priebeh horných dýchacích ciest, ľahko sa zaviedli do hrtana cez ústa alebo nos (Magillova krivka). Pre ľahšiu manipuláciu v dutine ústnej a pre zavedenie kanyly pod hrtanovú príchlopku (cez nos aj cez ústa) vymyslel špeciálne kliešte (Magillove kliešte). Navrhol jeden z prvých laryngoskopov, predchodcu súčasného Millerovho inštrumentu. Významnú pozornosť venoval bezpečnej aplikácii inhalačných anestetík pre pacienta a personál. Skonštruoval a postupne vyvinul niekoľko anestéziologických prístrojov (Magillov anestéziologický prístroj), ktoré sa stali predchodcom moderných odparovačov a anestetických strojov. Významnú úlohu zohral pri kontinuálnom vzdelávaní anestéziológov vo Veľkej Británii a Írsku.

Sir Ivan Maggil was important pioneers in modern anesthesiology. He created the basic instrumentation for securing the airway by intubation. He developed designs for intubation cannulas based on the principles of anatomy and physiology. Intubation cannulas are curved to copy the course of the upper airway, easily introduced into the larynx through the mouth or nose (Magill‘s curve). For easier manipulation in the oral cavity and for introducing the cannula under the epiglottis (through the nose and through the mouth), he invented special forceps (Magill‘s forceps). He designed one of the first laryngoscopes, the predecessor of the current Miller instrument. He paid significant attention to the application of safe inhalation anesthetics for the patient and staff. He designed and gradually developed several anesthetic devices (Magill‘s anesthesioligical device), which became the predecessor of modern vaporizers and anesthetic machines. He played a significant role in the continuing education of anaesthetists in the UK and Ireland.
