Driving with patients with diabetes mellitus

Driving with patients with chronic diseases must be safe not only for patients, but also for other road users. Patients with diabetes mellitus must undergo regular reassessment of their ability to drive at regular intervals (two years for professional drivers, five years for other drivers). In order for a patient to be able to drive a motor vehicle, they must meet several conditions: they must not have hypoglycemic unawareness, they must not have the limiting chronic complications of diabetes mellitus, and they must monitor their blood glucose before and during driving. The conditions for driving a motor vehicle are governed by a decree of the Ministry of the Interior of Slovakia and the Act on the Operation of Vehicles in Road Traffic.
