Urogynaecological fistulae

Urogynecological fistulas are pathological connections between the urinary tract (e.g., bladder or ureter) and the female reproductive organs (e.g., vagina). They most commonly result from obstetric trauma, surgical procedures, oncological processes, or prolonged pressure on pelvic organs. Clinically, they present with uncontrolled leakage of urine through the vagina, significantly impairing patients’ quality of life. Diagnosis involves a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging methods. Treatment is primarily surgical, aiming to restore the anatomical and functional integrity of the affected organs. Prevention includes early management of risk factors, particularly proper obstetric care and infection prevention.
