Sarcopenic obesity
Sarcopenic obesity is a complex clinical syndrome that combines the negative consequences of excess adipose tissue with the loss of muscle mass and strength. This phenotype significantly contributes to increased morbidity, mortality and impaired quality of life, especially in the elderly population and in patients with metabolic diseases. Nevertheless, it remains frequently underdiagnosed and undertreated in clinical practice, highlighting the need for greater awareness among healthcare professionals and the implementation of standardized diagnostic criteria. Effective management of sarcopenic obesity requires a multidisciplinary and individualized approach that includes nutritional, exercise, pharmacological and behavioral interventions. The goal of therapy should not only be to reduce body weight, but also to improve body composition, metabolic balance and functional capacity. New pharmacological strategies, including incretin and multireceptor agonists, as well as agents aimed at preserving or stimulating muscle mass, open the prospect for a more targeted and effective management of this syndrome.
