Osteoporosis in general practice

Itrepresents a serious healthcare and socio-economic burden. In Slovakia, the prevalence of osteoporosis is approximately 6%,with an estimated 264,000 patients diagnosed in 2019, of whom 81 % were women. Osteoporotic fractures, particularly hip and vertebral fractures, are associated with increased mortality, loss of independence, and long-term deterioration in quality of life. Early identification of at-risk patients in general practice plays a crucialrole in preventing complications. Current guidelines emphasize the assessment of clinicalrisk factors, the use ofthe FRAX calculator, and bone densitometry (DXA),which may be complemented by the evaluation oftrabecular microarchitecture using the trabecular bone score (TBS). The combination ofthese parameters allows precise risk stratification and supports clinical decision-making. The aim ofthis article is to provide an overview of the most recent changes in the indication for bone densitometry and their practical application in general practice, with a focus on risk stratification, individualized decision-making, and the effective use of DXA in the prevention of osteoporotic fractures.
