Classification of diabetic foot syndrome and ulcerations in patients with diabetes mellitus
Diabetic foot syndrome is defined as infection, ulceration or destruction of foot tissues in individuals with diabetes mellitus, associated with peripheral diabetic polyneuropathy and/or peripheral arterial disease of the lower extremities. This serious complication of diabetes mellitus significantly increases the risk of lower-limb amputation and patient mortality. Classification of diabetic foot syndrome plays a key role in communication among healthcare professionals, as it helps to characterise ulcers, guide patient management, support decisions regarding limb revascularisation, assess individual prognosis and compare treatment outcomes across institutions. The aim of this review is to briefly present the main risk factors for diabetic foot syndrome and to summarise the most commonly used classification systems.
