Graves-Basedow disease presenting with mania and psychosis

Graves-Basedow disease is an endocrine disorder causing hyperthyroidism, but its psychiatric manifestations, such as mania and psychosis, are less commonly discussed. Psychiatric symptoms can be confusing and lead to misdiagnosis, especially when they present during acute phases of the disease. A key part of the diagnosis is identifying hyperthyroidism as the cause of these symptoms. Treatment for Graves-Basedow disease, which includes antithyroid medications, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgical removal of part of the thyroid gland, can lead to improvement in psychiatric symptoms as well as stabilization of hormone levels. However, early diagnosis and a multidisciplinary approach, which includes endocrinologists, psychiatrists, and clinical psychologists are key to successful treatment.
