Fundamentals of CSF analysis in practice

Lumbar puncture with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis is a cornerstone diagnostic method to confirm or rule out pathological processes in the brain. Proper interpretation of CSF results facilitates timely diagnosis, guides appropriate treatment, and helps determine its duration. CSF cellularity can be assessed with a Fuchs-Rosenthal counting chamber (elements per 3.2 mm3, clinically rounded to 3 mm3) or a CSF analyzer (elements per 1 μl). We present practical examples of CSF calculations, evaluation, and interpretation for differentiating neuroinfections.
