Význam Streptococcus pneumoniae v patogenezi dětských bakteriálních infekcí – kazuistika pneumokokové meningitidy
The importance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the pathogenesis of bacterial infections in children – a case of Pneumococcal meningitis This article presents the importance of Streptococcus pneumoniae in the aetiology of bacterial infection in children and deals with the possibilities of antibiotic therapy. Since there is a low incidence of the penicillin-resistant strains of Pneumococcus in the Czech Republic penicillin is the cornerstone of therapy. Amoxycillin can be used in the pneumococcal respiratory infections. In the case of allergy to penicillins and cephalosporins, macrolides and cotrimoxazole are the alternative choices of treatment. The case of a teenage boy with a reccurent pneumococcal meningitis is described in this article. Key words: Streptococcus pneumoniae, antibiotic therapy, vaccination, meningitis.
