Syncope in children – management of syncope in accordance with recent guidelines
Syncope is a common reason for seeking medical attention in the pediatric population. The physician’s challenging task is to differentiate between a benign vasovagal syncope and cardiac syncope (arrhythmia or structural heart disease) or other forms of transient loss of consciousness (e. g. epilepsy), which can be a sign of a severe underlying disease requiring specific treatment. A thorough patient history, combined with physical examination and ECG, is the key in the establishment of correct diagnosis. Children with vasovagal syncope have a good prognosis generally requiring only lifestyle changes.
