Prevention of infective endocarditis in children
Prevention of infective endocarditis (IE) aims to reduce the risk of bacteremia in high-risk patients, especially those with a history of IE, prosthetic heart valves or certain congenital heart defects. Preventive measures include good oral and skin hygiene, regular dental check-ups, and prompt treatment of infections. Antibiotic prophylaxis is currently recommended only for high-risk patients undergoing invasive dental procedures. It may also be considered during dental procedures in patients with moderate risk or during non-dental procedures in patients with high risk. Amoxicillin is usually administered 30 – 60 minutes before the procedure, while alternative antibiotics are used in patients with penicillin allergy.
