Management of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children in a cohort from the Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Clinic, Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University, and the National Institute of Children’s Diseases

Pediatric obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) affects 1–5 % of children. This retrospective study included 165 patients with OSAS treated at the Pediatric ENT Clinic in Bratislava between 2019–2024. Residual OSAS risk was assessed using the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ ≥ 0.33). Mean PSQ score was 0.28 ± 0.17. Increased risk of residual OSAS was identified in 47 patients (28 %). Multivariate analysis identified as significant risk factors: larger tonsil size (Brodsky grades III–IV, p < 0.05), overweight/obesity (p < 0.05), and presence of comorbidities (p < 0.05). Surgical treatment resulted in symptom improvement in 72 % of patients. Identified risk factors require individualized surgical approach and intensive follow-up.
