Urinary tract infection in children

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common and potentially serious bacterial infection in childhood. History and examination findings may be nonspecific therefore a urine sample is required for the diagnosis of UTI, which may be difficult to obtain in young, toilet-trained children. Further investigations should be individualized according to several factors. Antimicrobial therapy should be guided by local guidelines due to increasing antibiotic resistance. Duration of treatment and indications for imaging remain controversial. This article presents an overview of the diagnosis and management of UTI in children, with the most important recent advances and evidence updates, particularly based on the latest European Association of Urology guidelines.
