Erythrocyte transfusion: liberal versus restrictive approach

Erythrocyte transfusion represents one of the most important therapeutic procedures in pediatric practice for the rapid correction of severe anemia. The correct decision to administer a transfusion is crucial to optimize the health status of pediatric patients and minimize the risks associated with excessive, non-indicated erythrocyte transfusion. Determining the necessity of transfusion requires consideration of many factors, such as the acuteness of anemia, the patient’s overall clinical status, the presence of comorbidities, symptoms of the anemia syndrome, and hemodynamic stability. In this article, we review the current recommendations for erythrocyte transfusion with respect to different clinical situations and current trends in transfusion medicine.
