Antibiotic therapy during breast-feeding Breast-feeding is often unreasonably discontinued due to pharmacotherapy of the mother. The antibiotic therapy risk for breast-fed child needs to be evaluated with the knowledge of real or supposed adverse events together with the amount of drug ingested in milk and its bioavailability. This review offers known data about following antibiotics: -lactam antibiotics, macrolides, clindamycin, vancomycin, aminoglycosides, sulfonamides, nitrofurantoin, tetracyclines, matronidazole, quinolones and chloramphenicol. The authorities advice on their use during breast-feeding and possible risks are discussed. Most of these antibiotics are of minimal clinical importance for the infant, but every case of drug use in nursing mother is always demanding more attention for the care of the child and close cooperation of the mother.
