Acute gastroenteritis in children

Acute gastroenteritis is one of the most common causes of infectious diseases in children. The most frequent etiologic agents of diarrheal diseases in children are viruses. The typical presentation of acute gastroenteritis is ԁiаrrhеa, vomiting, or both, additional manifestations may include fever, abdominal pain, headache, and myalgia. The most frequently used diagnostic method is examination of the stool. Oral rehydration solution administered in frequent appropriate doses, followed by refeeding, is the optimal treatment. It is important to properly set dietary measures. Targeted antibiotic treatment is given only in indicated cases. The dehydratation, which could be less or more severe, often complicate the infection and can lead to the hospitalization.
