Management of the oligometastatic colorectal carcinoma

Colorectal carcinoma represents the third most common malignancy worldwide and the most common cancer in Slovakia. Approximately 15-30% of patients are diagnosed in the metastatic stage at diagnosis, and approximately 20-50% of the patients with initially localised disease will progress to the metastatic stage. The management of patients with colorectal cancer is solely dependent on the right decision-making process within a multidisciplinary team. The category of patients with so-called oligometastatic disease represents a challenge with the goal of complete eradication of macroscopic disease, prolonging progression-free survival, and overall survival. A multidisciplinary approach is an important aspect for the right selection of the treatment sequence, especially when to start systemic treatment, and on the other hand, when to start localised treatment methods, and to select the right local method for individual cases. This work aims to summarise current European recommendations for the treatment of oligometastatic disease in colorectal cancer.
