Surgical treatment of prostate cancer
Radical prostatectomy is an operation to remove the prostate gland and tissues surrounding it. Open radical prostatectomy and laparoscopy prostatectomy are currently being replaced by robotic radical prostatectomy. This usually includes the seminal vesicles and some nearby lymph nodes. We review the indications and the surgical techniques of radical prostatectomy. The trifecta of the surgical treatment is cancer control, the preservation of continence and erectile potency.
