Clascoterone – a new molecule in the acne treatment
Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit involving increased sebum production, follicular hyperkeratinization, Cutibacterium acnes colonization, and inflammatory response. Clascoterone is a novel topical antiandrogen for the treatment of acne vulgaris that competitively inhibits androgen receptor binding within the pilosebaceous unit, thereby reducing sebum production and targeting early stages of acne pathogenesis. This article provides an overview of the current evidence regarding the mechanism of action, efficacy, and safety of clascoterone in acne treatment. Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in reducing both inflammatory and non-inflammatory lesions with a favorable safety profile, making it a promising topical therapeutic option, particularly for adolescent and adult patients.
