Early capture of prostate cancer – the role of general practitioner
It is likely that prostate cancer (PC) will soon become the leading cause of cancer death in men. This article summarizes a brief overview of risk factors, diagnostics, screening and prevention of PC for the needs of general practitioners for the early diagnosis of this disease. Age is the most important risk factor in PC, but race, family history, obesity have some influence on the development of PC. Currently, most cases of PC are diagnosed based on elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) serum levels. In the initial phase, PC is asymptomatic or urinary disorders are present. Advanced disease may be manifested by more significant signs of obstruction at the level of the bladder neck. Bone metastases cause skeletal pains and developing bone fractures. The prognosis of all patients with PC depends on several factors, but early diagnosis of tumor disease is especially important. Sufficient knowledge of general practitioners helps capture this disease at a stage when it is possible to completely cure the affected individuals. The key is the close cooperation of general practitioners with urologists.
