Resident study as part of general practitioner training (Part 2)
General medicine as a field of primary contact in recent years has been subject to many changes in terms of expanding competencies as well as undergraduate and postgraduate education. Since 2014, postgraduate specialization studies have also been possible as part of the Resident Study (RS), which has gradually gained precise rules during this period. At the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak Medical University, 98 residents are currently enrolled and 55 residents have completed their studies. 36/65 % participated in an anonymous questionnaire evaluating RS. 21/58 % of respondents said that it was the simplest form of enrollment in the specialty study as the reason for inclusion in the RS. Up to 22/61 % said that RS had fulfilled their expectations. Theoretical education was positively evaluated by 31/86 % of residents. After graduation of RS 34/94 % residents work at the general practitioner‘s clinic, of which 12/33 % are employed by a colleague of general practitioners, 10/28 % have received an outpatient clinic, 7/20 % work in a health care company specializing in general medicine , 4/11% opened an ambulance called on the “green field” and 3/8 % work in ambulance of the general practitioner‘s hospital. Most residents work in the Presov region 14/39 %, followed by Banska Bystrica 6/17 %, Nitra 4/11 %, and Bratislava region 4/11 %. From the point of view of practiced practice, the knowledge gained during the RS evaluated positively 33/89 %, negatively 3/8 % and 1/3 % could not express an opinion. The RS as a whole evaluated 26/72 % positively, 8/22 % negatively and 2/6 % of residents were unable to comment on the issue. 21/58 % of residents would enter the RS again, 7/20 % would not enter again and 8/22 % cannot answer this question unambiguously and I do not know the option. Resident study is undoubtedly a necessary form of education for primary contact doctors, especially general practitioners. This experience is also confirmed by absolvents of RS – residents.
