Resident study as part of general practitioner training (Part 1)
General medical education is undertaken at undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing levels. Since the start of resident studies in the field of general medicine, the rules of undergraduate education have also been modified, which included the subject general medicine consisting of theoretical and key 1-week practical intership in the general practitioners‘ ambulance in the all regions of Slovakia. At the Faculty of Medicine of the Slovak Medical University in Bratislava, the condition for the completion of the internship at the general practitioner‘s ambulance is the elaboration of a case report and evaluation of the internship by a doctor-trainer and a medical doctor. Our results, based on the assessment of the trainers, clearly show that most medics have a good theoretical knowledge, practical skills and are independent, initiative and reliable. Likewise, medics positively assess internships completed in general practitioners‘ outcomes in terms of acquiring practical skills, engaging in work in the ambulance and the approach of the trainer to the medic. The most commonly reported shortcomings of internships from the medical point of view are: little time for patient, little time for questions to the trainer, little time for evaluation of results, therapy, etc., low variability of patients, insufficient /short one week for such a wide range of issues. The compulsory subject general medicine to the study program of medical students is undoubtedly a very good step. It allows the medical practitioner to evaluate the work in the general practitioner‘s clinic in terms of its attractiveness and specifics.
