Obstructive sleep apnea and diabesity: current knowledge and recommendations
Both obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus are highly prevalent but still largely underdiagnosed conditions that if left untreated place affected individuals at a significantly increased morbidity and mortality risk. Based on the multidisciplinary approach and evidence-based medicine, the present paper aims to provide an overview of up-to-date knowledge and recommendations for medical care of patients with diabesity and sleep apnea. The work also highlights the need for screening and differential diagnosis of both disorders in all patients with metabolic syndrome. The screening should become a part of the regular high-risk screening of complications and comorbidities in diabetes- and sleep clinics. Guidelines have been developed to tailor syndrome Z therapies to patients according to the severity of the disorders, comorbid diseases, and patient preference.
