Kardiologický pacient z pohľadu urológa

Cardiac patient from a urologic point of view Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an important medical problem – although ED is a „benign“ disorder, it affects physical and psychosocial health and has a significant impact on the quality of life of sufferers and their partners and families. Etiology of ED comprises organic as well as organic causes. ED can precede clinical manifestation of a principal disease which is causing ED. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypogonadism, aging is the key link between ED and ischemic heart disease. The common denominator is endothelial dysfunction in the progression of which arterial atherosclerosis develops. Penile endothelial dysfunction leads to ED, which becomes an indicator of systemic endothelial dysfunction and possible subsequent coronary event. Physicians (urologists, andrologists, cardiologists, diabetologists, internists, general practitioners and others) should systematically look for ED in any male, in particular in men with higher risk of developing ED.
