Chronic myeloid leukemia – model of successful targeted therapy of oncologic disease

Advances in treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia, especially regarding tyrosine kinase inhibitors, need regular updating of patients management and treatment recommendations. A European LeukemiaNet expert panel reviewed recommendations from 2009 according to results of many clinical studies. In the article we bring practical view on the disease, clinical symptoms, diagnosis, summary of response to treatment, criteria of optimal response, warnings and treatment failure, treatment recommendations in newly diagnosed patients, as well as patients resistent or intolerant to first line therapy. Specific recommendations are made for patients in accelerated and blastic phase, as well as for allogeneic stem cell transplantation.

Keywords: chronic myeloid leukemia, ELN recommendations, tyrosine kinase inhibitors.
