University study of medicine in Slovakia in first years of the Faculty of medicine, Comenius University

The Faculty of medicine is the oldest of all thirteen Comenius University in Bratislava faculties. It was established as the first of all the basic institution that have formed the core of the biggest and first modern university in Slovakia. However, it took a very long time to acquire first Slovak (Czechoslovak) university. It has been one hundred years exactly, since the faculty became involved in a process of educatin Slovak intelligence and developing its scientific knowledge. Faculty of medicine and the whole Comenius University was founded at the turbulent times, full of changes. Founding the Faculty of medicine in Bratislava was no coincidental occurance. Numbers of doctors were critically low in Slovakia and the health awareness of the population was not doing any better. Comenius university was established by a legal norm, namely the Act n. 375/1919 (from June 27th, 1919) on a foundation of the Czechoslovak State University in Bratislava, which came into effect from July 11th, 1919. On the last July day, the president appointed first professors, mainly experts from the Medical Faculty of the Charles University in Prague, frequently referred to as “Hynek’s group” in secondary literature, named after Professor Kristian Hynek, a distinguished pathologist, internist, organiser and the first rector of the Czechoslovak State University.
