Superficial thrombophlebitis – current view on diagnosis and treatment

Superficial thrombophlebitis is considered a relatively benign condition. Mostly accompanies chronic venous insufficiency and as varicophlebitis has a typical clinical presentation. In the diagnostics, i tis confirmed by compression ultrasound, that is also a tool for exclusion or confirmation of the concomitant deep vein thrombosis. The therapy of the first choice in Slovak Republic is fondaparinux administered subcutaneously for 40 days. The regime, analgetics and postponed surgery for varicose veins are the other parts of the management. In cases of non varicose thrombophlebitis as well as in patients with reccurent varicophlebitis, we perform oncological screening and selected evaluation of possible thrombophilia.
