Acquired hemophilia A as a cause of severe postoperative bleeding - case report

Bleeding complications are serious complications in the postoperative period. The causes can be divided into surgical as well as nonsurgical. Non-surgical causes of postoperative bleeding also include acquired hemophilia A - rare autoimmune disease caused by the spontaneous production of autoantibodies targeting endogenous factor VIII. Acquired hemophilia A is predominantly a disease of the elderly. It is associated with massive subcutaneous bleeding, followed by gastrointestinal bleeding, muscle bleeding and genitourinary and retroperitoneal bleeding. The coagulogram typically shows isolated prolongation in activated partial thromboplastin time and normal prothrombin time. Diagnosis and treatment require a multidisciplinary approach. The disease is associated with high morbidity and mortality.
