Thromboprophylaxis in surgical patients based on EBM. Recommendations update focused on post-grade surgeons

Introduction: Thromboembolic disease and its compliations are among the most frequent causes of mortality and morbidity amongs surgical patients, therefore adequate preoperative assesment and choosing the right profylaxis is key. The recommendations are still evolving and updated according to the latest findings of EBM – evidence based medicine. Objective: The goal of this paper is to sum up the current information about the right assesment of risk preoperatively and recommendations within various groups of surgical patients. Results: This paper systematically sums up the latest recommendations on the right assesment of patient’s risk of developing thromboembolic disease perioperatively and choosing the right pharmacological prophylaxis. Conclusion: There are various scoring systems for evaluating thromboembolic risk, based on which patient gets adequate thromboembolic prophylaxis periopeeratively, with interrupting or bridging chronic anticoagulant medication, without increasing the risk of haemorrhagic complications. These recommendations are being regularly reevaluated based on latest research.
