The third dimension in laparoscopy: Full HD 3D laparoscopic technique - initial experience

The era of laparoscopy, which achieved its significant boom mainly in the 90-years of the last century has introduced a two-dimensional view into operations. For a surgeon it meant a shift from a depth perception scope during classical operation to a “one eye” view during laparoscopy. This deficiency was quickly overcome by the experience of surgeon, who based on his experience, can correctly estimate the depth of the operating field. From the beginning, the resolution of the imaging chain constitutes a certain limit in terms of the quality view. The introduction of the HD technology has brought an improvement; however, a real breakthrough in imaging didnt come until the introduction of 3D technology. A fundamental change of this view was achieved through the introduction of robotic technique of operation, which allows a 3D image, that is to say a 3-dimensional view. Due to its high price, robotic surgery doesnt allow for a massive application. So the turning point is the implementation of 3D technology in HD quality into a common laparoscopic tower, which has been introduced by the firm B. Braun Aesculap® Einstein Vision. The authors describe the first experience with its application in Slovakia during May 2012 at I. surgical department of LF UPJŠ UN L. Pasteur.
