Fluid treatment and abdominal surgery

Fluid therapy is one of the option of maintaining hemodynamic stability of patient after abdominal surgery. It provides an improvement of an adequate blood pressure, an organ perfusion and tissue oxygen delivery, while avoiding caused shock. The indications, contraindications, adverse effects of fluid therapy as well as fluid responsiveness should be taken into consideration before starting the treatment. The excessive as well as unadequate amount of fluids can cause postoperative complications that have impact on long term outcome. These days, the individual goal- directed therapy is recommended as compared to liberal or restrictive fluid management in taking care of patient after abdominal surgery.
