Current algorithm of postoperative nausea and vomiting prevention and treatment
Post-operative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a frequent, distressing and dangerous problem after surgery in anaesthesia. It can result in serious complications in early postoperative period. Etiology of PONV is of multifactorial origin and its effective treatment is often complicated. Patients at risk of PONV should be identified preoperatively, including the individual assessment and quantification of their risk, in order to allow for adequate prevention. Such attitude reduces the incidence and severity of PONV in the first 48 hours after surgery.
