Pancreatic injuries of children and adults

The pancreas is injuried about 1-5% of patients with abdominal trauma. In Europe majority of cases are after blunt trauma, in USA two thirds of panceatic injuries are associated with penetrating abdominal trauma. The patients are observed clinically with laboratory evaluation of serum amylase, and abdominal CT scan. The goals of operative therapy for pancreatis injury include control of hemorrhage, debridement of nonviable tissue with preservation of viable pancreatic tissue, and adequate external and exocrine drainage. Complications such as pancreatic abscess, acute pseudocyst formation are not rare.
