Complications of the surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis

Restorative proctocolectomy with ileal-pouchanal anastomosis has become a standard procedure for treating both chronic ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis. It restores gastrointestinal continuity, re-establishes transanal defecation and avoids a permanent stoma. Although this technically demanding procedure is associated with low mortality rates, it is frequently accompanied by early and late complications. The incidence of complications after restorative proctocolectomy has been relatively high compared to other abdominal surgery. This article will review these complications.
