History of pulmonal embolectology. Massive pulmonary thromboembolism

The history of pulmonary embolectomy has been known for over 110 years, and after initial failures in the treatment of massive pulmonary thromboembolism (MPTE), embolectomy has been life-saving surgery for many years. Operational treatment has improved in recent years and postoperative outcomes have also improved long-term survival. Even in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, we have seen positive global trends and positive results. The first successful pulmonary embolectomy in the Czech Republic and Slovakia was carried out on February 14 in 1968 at the Clinic of Surgery of University hospital and the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Martin by professor Šteiner et al. (41). Also, the first successful intrapulmonary thrombolysis of MPTE was performed at the Clinic of Surgery Surgery of University hospital and the Faculty of Medicine, Comenius University in Martine on July 27 in 1971, by professor J. Mazuch et al. (16). Both case studies were published in both foreign and domestic papers (16, 41). The case reports, even if they are of historical value, are more valuable to bring to the light the historical facts and the former reality of the deadly MPTE.
