Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) of duodenum manifested as gastrointestinal bleeding – case report
Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is considered as potentially malignant neoplasm and is most common mesenchymal tumor of digestive tract. The most common sites for GIST to occur are stomach and small intestine. The proliferation of GIST is most commonly driven by gain-of-function mutations in the receptor of tyrosine kinase (KIT) or platelet-derived growth factor receptor α (PDGFRα). The most common presenting symptoms are gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal fullness and weight loss. However most of patients stay asymptomatic. Proliferation activity and size of tumor are important for level of malignity. Surgical treatment considered to be only curable treatment for patient. In case of recurrence or metastatic cancer biological treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors (imatinib) should be used. We described case of 72 years old patient with gastrointestinal bleeding hospitalised at the Second Department of Surgery, Pavol Jozef Šafarik University, Faculty of Medicine and Louis Pasteur University Hospital Košice.
