Diagnostics and treatment of colitis caused by Clostridium difficile
One of the diseases that have ocurred with a significant increase in recent years is colitis caused by Clostridium difficile (CDI – Clostridium difficile infection). In this disease the colon is damaged by toxins produced by the ethological agent of the disease and is usually a consequence of previous antibiotic treatment. It manifests with diarrhea, which may be accompanied by fever as well. Diarrheal stools are numerous and of small volume, sometimes also with tenesmus. Constitutionally weaker patients may experience signs of incontinence. Prognosis is worse for obese patients with BMI greater than 35, diabetic patients, but also all immunocompromised, mainly elderly people. Only timely diagnosis and proper treatment can save lives of these patients.
