Current possibillities of postoperative pain management after laparoscopic procedures
The World Health Organization and International Association for the Study of Pain consider pain relief to be a human right. Pain management is subject of many disciplines, including medicine, ethics and law. Failure to controll pain is viewed worldwide as unethical practice. Pain is subjective sensation, unique and original for the given individual that cannot be objectively assessed. However, pain characteristics, its pathophysiology and treatment possibilities are precisely defined. Understanding pain mechanisms and nociceptive pathways, including its transmitters can help in prevention and treatment of postoperative pain. Postoperative pain after laparoscopic procedures, although less intensive compared to open surgery, requires equally responsible approach based on the knowledge of current possibilities of postoperative pain management.
