Does cariprazine improve psychosocial functioning in patients with schizophrenia?
Negative symptoms and cognitive impairment associated with schizophrenia are strongly connected to poorer functional outcomes and reduced quality of life. Cognitive impairment is closely associated with the severity of negative symptoms of schizophrenia and the level of impairment of psychosocial functioning. Although functional recovery could be advocated as an achievable treatment goal, many current treatment interventions may not improve functional outcomes. Cariprazine proved superiority over risperidone in the improvement of negative symptoms and psychosocial functioning; cognitive improvement was also significantly different in favor of cariprazine.
