Cough pharmacotherapy part II. – expectorants
Mucociliary clearance is among the important airways defense mechanisms. Its efficiency can be reduced in the case of the respiratory diseases, which cause disorders in the ciliary movement of respiratory epithelium, or changes in the physicochemical properties of mucus. This article provides basic information on the physiology and pathophysiology of mucociliary clearance and basic characterization of expectorants currently used in clinical practice.
