Antioxidants in prevention of chronic diseases – part II.: Oxidative stress and some selected diseases
Oxidative stress is the imbalance between two systems of oxidants and antioxidants in favour of prooxidant which causes damage to biologically important molecules and cells. It can play an important role in the pathogenesis of many chronic diseases. Oxidative stress is the imbalance between the formation and removal of reactive oxygen and nitrogen metabolites in favour of their formation, which results in potential damage. In oxidative stress, the oxidation particles prevail over cellular antioxidants in cells, whereby the balance between the forming radicals and their natural scavengers is disturbed. Free radicals and oxidative stress participate directly or indirectly in noncommunicable diseases many other diseases.
