Prevention and screening in pediatric ophthalmology
Prevention and screening are becoming increasingly important methods of modern health care throughout medical disciplines, particularly in pediatric ophthalmology. They are implemented at different stages of childhood. Some congenital and hereditary risks for vision can be addressed prenatally by gynecologic care. In our country, neonatal cataract screening has been part of neonatal care in the maternity unit for 12 years, credeization for the prevention of gonorrhea has been introduced several decades ago, and the application of iodine povidone has broadened the effect of this measure to the prevention of chlamydial conjunctivitis. Visual functions are regularly monitored until adulthood in primary pediatric care. In cooperation with ophthalmologists, pediatricians can detect refractive errors, strabism and blunt-sightedness very early. Screening has become a cardinal modern method for early detection of diseases or anomalies of children‘s eyesight, and also of some systemic diseases with ocular presentation. Early detection is the prerequisite for more effective treatment, compensation of anomalies and prevention of complications in various visual and systemic disorders.
