Edemas – causes and differential diagnosis

Tissue edema in childhood always represents a pathological condition. Edema may be generalized, localized, acute or chronic. Its differential diagnosis is demanding, as edemas may develop due to a myriad of generalized disorders and/or local processes. First step of the rational diagnostic algorhythm is detailed anamnestic evaluation and thoughtful physical examination, which provide key informations for planning further diagnostic tests and causal treatment.
