Glaucoma in children
Paediatric glaucoma (pathologically raised intraocular pressure) is a heterogenous disease, the primary congenital form being most prevalent. The latter is due to trabeculodysgenesis (a congenital anomaly of the anterior eye chamber angle) that causes elevation of intraocular pressure. In Slovakia and in other parts of the world, 2 etiological forms are recognized: either with a CYP1B1 gene mutation or without any known mutation, the former being liked to and unfavourable prognosis. Surgical interventions combined with topical hypotensives are the treatments of choice. Treatment is very effective in primary congenital glaucoma without a genetic cause, as opposed to glaucoma with a CYP1B1 mutation.
