Diabetes mellitus v dojčenskom a batolivom veku
Diabetes mellitus in infant and toddler age
Diabetes mellitus in children under 3 years of age is no more a rare disease. Over the last 10 years, the age of manifestation has shifted from puberty and adolescence to lower age categories. Alarming demographic data demonstrate that the most intensive increase in the incidence of diabetes is in children under 5 years of age. In infants and toddlers, characteristic clinical symptoms are often attributed to other causes, and the diagnosis is not rarely reached in the state of severe diabetic ketoacidosis. Delayed diagnosis may have serious clinical consequences for the entire course of the disease and the development of chronic micro- and macrovascular complications. Successful treatment of diabetes manifested during first few years of life is a „long-distance run,“ which requires close cooperation and assistance from whole family in a team with a pediatrician and a diabetologist.
