General anesthesia and neurotoxicity: results of current studies?
„Neurotoxicity of anesthetics“ has become one of the most discussed topics in pediatric anesthesiology. The above mentioned issue concerns in particular a group of youngest children, newborns and infants undergoing diagnostic or surgical procedures in general anesthesia. In recent years, the results of experimental studies have shown that anesthetics can cause neurodegeneration processes or neuroapoptosis modifications in mammalian offspring, resulting in a disorder of the cognitive function of an individual. These disturbing conclusions have led to discussions and realizations of many retrospective studies that observe the impact of general anesthesia on children, following their psychomotor development and behavioral changes in the later life of the child. Recent studies suggest that it is unlikely that one general anesthesia (over a period of up to 3 hours) in children affects the behavior or learning of a child, but it is really important to consider whether it is necessary to perform all imaging examinations or surgical procedures (e.g. orthopedic correction, adenotomy...) in general anesthesia to children up to three years of age.
