Bronchopulmonary dysplasia – what is new after 50 years
The number of surviving premature infants over the course of the recent years has dramatically increased. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (bronchopulmonary dysplasia – BPD) is the most common chronic lung disease (chronic lung disease – CLD) in early childhood. The dia- gnosis of BPD has been based on the need of oxygen during the 28 days after birth. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD, CLD) is currently one of the dominant problems of neonatal intensive care. The priority of care of extremely immature newborns and the newborns with respiratory insufficiency is to find the optimal preventive-therapeutic approach, which can reduce the incidence and/or severity of BPD. Optimal care of children with BPD requires a multidisciplinary approach of pulmonologist, neonatologist, pediatric cardiologist, physio- therapist and nurses.
