How to manage venous acces devices in oncology patients – new insights to venous accesses

Nowadays, the use of medium and long-term central venous devices is a standard of care for oncological patients with a wide range of uses (chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition or adequate palliative care). The first step in comprehensive oncology care, after the decision on the indication of the treatment is the correct assessment of the need for the vein access device and the correct indication for the device placement (central, peripheral device). Individual types of vascular catheters have their advantages but also the risks associated with implantation and their use, not excluding the risk of infections or thromboses. The correct implantation technique, using ultrasound and ECG navigation, as well as the correct access care technique, can eliminate the complications significantly, thus ensuring the safe and long-term use of the catheter. In conclusion of the article is the presentation of our experience with the introduction of PICC (peripherally implanted catheter catheter) and midline catheters, which we frequently use as medium to long-term devices in adult oncology patients as the only workplace in Slovakia. We present a summary of our 563 patients with PICC and 718 patients with midline catheter over the period january 2015 – juny 2018.
