Specifics of parenteral nutrition in cancer patients
Malnutrition is common issue in cancer patients. Intestinal failure in cancer trajectory can lead to indication of parenteral nutrition (PN) in patients with remaining anabolic potential according to ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) and ESPEN (The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism) guidelines. Due to the a risk of adverse events and life-threatening complications in parenteral nutrition application, the multidisciplinary team should treat the patient, set and communicate the goal of the treatment and the indications for withdrawal with the patient and his/her relatives. Parenteral nutrition should not be indicated at the end-of-life situation. Performance status and Glasgow prognostic score can be helpful in prognostication.
