Organization of cancer screening programs in Slovakia – past, present and challenges for the future

Cancer and cardiovascular diseases are the largest contributors to overall morbidity and mortality in the population and represent public health issue. Cancer prevention and control in the population is one of the essential activities of public health. For organizing cancer screening programs, European Commission has published guidelines on quality assurance in breast cancer screening and diagnosis (published in 2006, Supplements in 2013), cervical cancer screening (published in 2008, second edition in 2015) and colon cancer screening (published in 2010). In the year 2017 and 2018, Slovakia has come significantly closer to reaching a high political level decision to implement population-based screening programs for colorectal cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer after several years’ efforts of significant experts. Screening implementation is listed in health spending budget for the year 2019 and is included among value-formoney measures, increasing the value and quality of healthcare.
